Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) scored 24 points and sophomore guard
Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) added 20 to lead Shepherd University (13-11, 8-10 MEC) to an 86-72 win over Urbana (1-22, 0-18 MEC ) in MEC men's basketball action at Urbana on Saturday.
Davis hit on 7-of-13 field goal attempts with a 5-of-8 effort from three-point range. He sunk 5-of-7 free throws. Roman connected on 7-of-11 field goals with a 6-of-7 effort from the foul line.
Sophomore forward
AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./Saint James School) posted his sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Senior forward
Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Presbyterian) tossed in 12 points, while junior guard
Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) recorded his fourth double-double of the year with 11 points and a game-high 10 assists.
Jahmere Howze had 16 points and Carlas Jackson added 14 for the Blue Knights. Austin Adams had 13 points, while Matt Csuhran and Dmitri Abner each had 10.
Shepherd took the lead for good at 9-8 on a jumper by Roman with 16:16 left in the first half and had a 41-37 edge at halftime.
Shepherd used a 12-0 run late in the second half to gain a 16-point advantage at 77-61 with 4:19 remaining to take control of the game.
Shepherd shot 51.7 percent (31-60) from the floor with a 36.8 percent (7-19) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 17-of-21 free throws (81 percent). Urbana shot 40.6 percent (28-69) from the floor with a 23.1 percent (6-26) effort from beyond the arc. The Blue Knights sunk 10-of-15 free throws (66.7 percent).
Shepherd had a 37-34 edge on the boards. The Rams forced eight turnovers and committed nine.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host University of Charleston for a 7:30 p.m. game.
