Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Chyress Lockhart scored 18 points to lead University of Charleston (9-16, 7-12 MEC) to a 70-69 win over Shepherd University (5-20, 4-15 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Thursday.
Junior guard
Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) scored a game-high 21 points to pace the Rams. Mason hit on 5-of-12 field goals with a perfect 11-of-11 effort from the foul line.
Sophomore guard
Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) added 15 points, while junior forward
Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She also had a game-high five steals.
Freshman guard
Kristen Nunn (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) chipped in with 11 points.
Kiara Johnson added 14 points and 16 rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Mya Walker contributed 14 points and six boards.
Shepherd had a 28-26 lead at halftime.
Charleston opened up a 10-point lead as 63-53 after a pair of free throws by Lockhart with 5:59 left in the game. Shepherd rallied to within a point after Arden hit 1-of-2 free throws with 40 seconds left. The Rams were unable to convert on a pair of layups in the game's final seconds.
The Rams connected on 41.8 percent (23-55) from the floor with a 11.1 percent (1-9) performance from three-point range. Shepherd hit on 78.6 percent of its free throws (22-28). Charleston hit on 44.4 percent (24-54) of its field goals with a 29.4 percent (5-17) effort from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles drained 70.8 percent (17-24) of their free throws.
Charleston had a 38-32 advantage in rebounding. Shepherd forced 19 turnovers and committed 10.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host West Virginia State for a 2 p.m. contest.
