Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) scored a game-high 21 points and freshman guard
Kristen Nunn (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) added 18 points and eight assists to lead Shepherd University (6-20, 5-15 MEC) to an 86-73 win over West Virginia State (12-14, 9-11 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Arden connected on 8-of-12 field goals with a 1-of-2 effort from three-point range. She was 4-for-4 from the foul line.
Junior forward
Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) had 14 points and six rebounds, while junior guard
Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) added 12 points. Freshman forward
Elizabeth Moorman (New Market, Md./Oakdale) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Laura Szorenyi scored 19 points and Deyahnna Styles added 17 for the Yellow Jackets. Shealyn Shafer posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Shepherd had a 40-37 lead at halftime.
West Virginia State rallied to within eight points at 68-60 after a pair of free throws by Szorenyi with 6:44 remaining in the game.
Shepherd went on a 13-4 run to take a 17-point advantage at 81-64 after a three-pointer by Nunn with 2:33 left to pull away for the victory Arden had six points during the run.
The Rams connected on 54 percent (34-63) from the floor with a 33.3 percent (4-12) performance from three-point range. Shepherd hit on 77.8 percent of its free throws (14-18). West Virginia State hit on 38.1 percent (24-63) of its field goals with a 9.1 percent (1-11) effort from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets drained 80 percent (24-30) of their free throws.
Shepherd had a 39-31 edge in rebounding. Shepherd forced eight turnovers and committed 13.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
Elizabeth Moorman led the Rams with eight rebounds.
