Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Jamel Morris scored a game-high 20 points to lead fifth-ranked Fairmont State (25-3, 19-3 MEC) to a 73-54 win over Shepherd University (15-13, 10-12 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Morris hit 8-of-14 shots with a 4-of-9 effort from three-point range.
Senior forward
Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Presbyterian) led the Rams with 12 points. Freshman forward
Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) added 11 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard
Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 10 points.
Thomas Wimbush had 14 points and Matt Bingaya added 13 for the Falcons.
Fairmont State had a 29-26 lead at halftime behind eight first half points from Wimbush.
The Falcons used an 8-0 run to open up a 16-point lead at 52-36 after a three-pointer by Morris with 11:00 remaining and Shepherd was unable to recover.
Shepherd shot 36.7 percent (22-60) from the floor with a 19.2 percent (5-26) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 5-of-12 free throws (41.7 percent). Fairmont State shot 49.2 percent (32-65) from the floor with a 19 percent (4-21) effort from beyond the arc. The Falcons sunk 5-of-14 free throws (35.7 percent).
Fairmont State had a 45-33 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 10 turnovers and committed 15.
The Rams await word on pairings for next week's MEC Tournament.
