Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Katie Nunan scored a game-high 27 points to lead Fairmont State (18-10, 12-10 MEC) to a 66-63 win over Shepherd University (7-21, 6-16 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Sophomore guard
Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) led the Rams with 22 points. Arden connected on 6-of-17 field goals with an 0-of-4 effort from three-point range. She was 10-for-10 from the foul line.
Freshman guard
Kristen Nunn (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) added 12 points, while freshman guard
Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West York Area) posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Junior guard
Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) handed out a game-high seven assists.
Amanda Ruffner added 16 points and nine boards for the Falcons.
Shepherd had a 35-33 lead at halftime.
Fairmont State outscored Shepherd 20-11 in the third period to take a seven-point advantage at 53-46.
Shepherd rallied to within in a point at 64-63 after a layup by Arden with 16 seconds left. Nunan hit a pair of free throws with 13 seconds remaining to up the lead to 66-63. Arden's three-point attempt in the final seconds missed and the Falcons held on for the win.
The Rams connected on 37.7 percent (23-61) from the floor with an 18.2 percent (2-11) performance from three-point range. Shepherd hit on 71.4 percent of its free throws (15-21). Fairmont State hit on 39.2 percent (20-51) of its field goals with a 20 percent (2-10) effort from beyond the arc. The falcons drained 85.7 percent (24-28) of their free throws.
Shepherd had a 42-31 edge in rebounding. Shepherd forced 11 turnovers and committed 12.
The Rams await word on seeding for next week's MEC Tournament.
