Shepherd Baseball Gains Split on the Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DINWIDDIE, Va. – Shepherd University (4-4) went 1-1 in baseball action on Monday. The Rams fell, 8-7, to St. Thomas Aquinas College in an early game and recorded an 11-7 win over Philadelphia University in a later game.

Shepherd smacked 18 hits en route to the victory in the battle of the Rams.

Sophomore designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) went 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored to lead the Rams. Heleine and junior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) each belted home runs. Sarty added a 4-for-6 performance with three RBI, while senior second baseman Zane Bard (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg/Mount St. Mary's) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Fernando Garza and Steven Wells each had a pair of hits for Philadelphia.

Freshman pitcher Colin Benner (Clear Brook, Va./Millbrook)  (5.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 4 Ks, 0 BB) (1-0) gained the win for Shepherd. Andrew Dark (0-1) took the loss for Philadelphia (1-3).

Freshman catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) led the Rams against STAC with a 3-for-5 effort with three runs batted in. He hit a solo blast and a double.

Junior outfielder Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) posted a 2-for-5 outing with three runs scored. Junior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall) added a pair of hits.

Nick Gargan had three hits to lead a 12-hit attack for the Spartans.

Shepherd battled back from an 8-4 deficit with a run in the seventh and two in the ninth, but the Spartans held on for the win.

John Bentley (6.0 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 5 Ks, 0 BB) took the loss for the Rams. Sam Vincenzo notched the win for St Thomas Aquinas (3-1).

The Rams are slated to return to action on March 15 when they host Pitt-Johnstown for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
