Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Zac Grossenbacher scored 26 points and Seger Bonifant added 25 to lead sixth-ranked West Liberty (20-2, 14-2 MEC) to a 111-99 win over Shepherd University (11-11, 6-10 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Senior forward
Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Presbyterian) scored a career and game-high 29 points to pace the Rams. He hit on 11-of-16 field goals with a 7-of-12 effort from beyond the arc.
Sophomore guard
Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) added 24 points, while junior guard
Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) had 17 points and a game-high 10 assists.
Sophomore forward
AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./Saint James School) contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots.
David Dennis Jr. added 15 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists for the Hilltoppers.
West Liberty had a 46-40 lead at halftime behind 11 first half points from Devin Hoehn.
Shepherd trailed but only four points at 79-75 after a layup by McTavish with 9:52 left in the game, but the Hilltoppers proceeded on a 10-2 run to take a 12-point lead and take control of the contest.
Shepherd shot 43.3 percent (26-60) from the floor with a 38.5 percent (10-26) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 12-of-13 free throws (92.3 percent). Wheeling Jesuit shot 49.2 percent (31-63) from the floor with a 30.8 percent (8-26) effort from beyond the arc. The Cardinals connected on 12-of-18 free throws (66.7 percent).
Shepherd had a 37-33 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 13 turnovers and committed 19.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Notre Dame for a 7:30 p.m. game.
Naim Muhammad had 17 points and 10 assists.
Steffen Davis had seven points and six assists.
Winston Burgess had eight points and six boards.
AJ Carr had 14 points and seven rebounds.
