Shepherd Baseball Splits with Glenville State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Shepherd University (7-5, 1-1 MEC) used a 12-hit attack en route to a 10-6 nightcap triumph over Glenville State (2-16, 1-3 MEC) in Mountain East Conference baseball doubleheader action at Glenville on Thursday. Glenville State gained a 9-5 win in game one.

The Rams took a 6-0 in the first inning in the nightcap. Senior shortstop Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) belted a grand slam and sophomore designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) had a solo blast to key the scoring outburst.

The Rams belted five round-trippers in the contest as Heleine had a pair of solo shots, junior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) hit a two-run blast and freshman catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) had a solo blast.

Sarty went 3-for-5 to lead the Rams.

Zach Sanford had a 3-for-5 effort for Glenville State.

Junior pitcher John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (7.0 IP, 8 H, 2R, 2 ER, 4 Ks, 0 BB)) (1-3) gained the win. Brady Wilkinson (3.0 IP, 10 H, 10 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) took the loss for the Pioneers.
 
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one behind a two-run double by Heleine and an RBI-double by Sarty .

The Pioneers rallied in the bottom of the first with four runs with a three-run blast by Logan Henderson keying the rally.

Shepherd tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth on an RBI-single by junior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware State).

The Pioneers added three runs in the fifth before sophomore third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) singled home a run in the sixth to make it 7-5 lead.

John Hunter and Sanford each had solo homer in the sixth for Glenville State to complete the scoring.

Heleine and Sarty each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Randy Baugher went 3-for-3 for the Pioneers.

Karl Bennington (5.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 Ks, 3 BB) earned the win for the Pioneers. Bentley (4.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 Ks, 1 BB)  took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
