Shepherd Baseball Takes Pair from West Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Shepherd University (9-5, 3-1 MEC) swept West Virginia Wesleyan (7-10, 0-4 MEC) in Mountain East Conference baseball doubleheader action at Hank Ellis Field on Monday. The Rams gained a 7-2 victory in game one and added a 2-0 triumph in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the second inning in game one behind a RBI-double by sophomore third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown)and a two-run single by junior outfielder Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando).

The Bobcats got on the board in the fifth on an RBI-double by Nick Jones.

The Rams plated four more runs in the seventh as freshman catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) smacked a two-run single, while Carney and senior second baseman Zane Bard (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg/Mount St. Mary's) each drove in a run.

Wesleyan added a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Greg Smith.

Hamel went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs to lead the Rams.

Senior pitcher Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) (2-0) (6.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 4 Ks, 1 BB) earned the win with relief help from freshman Colin Benner (Clear Brook, Va./Millbrook) (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 Ks 0 BB). Hunter Rotarius (1-1) (6.0 IP, 5 ER, 7 H, 2 Ks, 2 BB) suffered the loss for Bobcats.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second in the nightcap as senior shortstop Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) led off with a double and later scored on a single by Hamel.

The Rams added a run in the ninth as sophomore designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) doubled and scored on a single by Carney.

Freshman pitcher AJ Stead (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) (9.0 IP, 4 H, 7 Ks, 2 BB) (2-0) scattered four hits in the shutout win. Bobcat starter Brandon Stratton (7.0 IP 5H 1 ER, 3 Ks, 1 BB) (0-2) (7.0 IP, 5 ER, 8 H, 6 Ks, 3 BB) took the loss.

Porter went 2-for-4 to lead the Rams.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they host West Virginia State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
