Shepherd Baseball Runs Win Streak to Seven with Sweep over Charleston

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (13-5, 7-1 MEC) ran its win streak to seven games with a sweep of Charleston (7-15, 3-5 MEC) in Mountain East Conference baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams gained a 4-1 victory in game one and added a 13-5 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in game one on a solo blast by senior shortstop Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando).

The Rams added three runs in the third on an RBI-double by junior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) and a two-run single by junior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware State).
 
Charleston scored a run in the fourth on an RBI-double by Gianfranco Morello.

Senior pitcher Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 1 BB) (3-0) picked up the complete game win for the Rams. Tyler Shreve (6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 8 Ks, 3 BB) (1-5) took the loss.

Trailing 5-2 in the fourth in the nightcap, the Rams erupted for seven runs en route to the sweep. Porter belted a grand slam, freshman catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) hit a solo blast, and senior second baseman Zane Bard (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg/Mount St. Mary's) added a two-run single to highlight the rally.

Shepherd added a pair of runs in the sixth on an infield error and Porter belted a two-run blast in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Porter went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and six runs batted in to lead the Rams. Sarty added a 3-for-5 effort with three runs scored.

Justin Mixon and Jeff Somuk each had a pair of hits for the Golden Eagles.

Freshman pitcher AJ Stead (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) (5.0 IP, 7 H 5 ER, 6 Ks, 3 BB) (3-0) picked up the win for the Rams. Golden Eagle starter Anthony Brunetti (3.2 IP, 9 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (2-2) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Shippensburg for a single nine-inning game at 3 p.m.
