Shepherd Softball Sweeps West Liberty

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Shepherd University (13-6, 7-0) swept West Liberty (6-24, 0-10) in MEC softball doubleheader action at West Liberty on Saturday. Shepherd recorded a 3-1 victory in game one and added a 6-2 win in the nightcap. The Rams extended their winning streak to 10 games.

Trailing 1-0 in game one, the Rams plated a pair of runs in the fifth. Sophomore designated player Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) belted a solo homer and freshman second baseman Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) singled and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Rams added a run in the sixth as freshman shortstop Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) singled and later scored on a single by Cox.

Cox went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Nicki Mihalik had a pair of hits to lead the Hilltoppers.

Junior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 8 Ks, 1 BB) (5-3) gained the win for the Rams. Savanna Sieger (7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 6 Ks, 1 BB) took the loss for the Hilltoppers.

Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the second inning in the nightcap. Junior first baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) hit a two-run double to key the rally.

West Liberty answered back with a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single by Madison Collett.

The Rams added a run in the fourth on an RBI-single by Witt and another in the fifth on an RBI double by Cox.

The Hilltoppers added a run on an RBI-single by Kelsi Johnson.

Witt went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and  Munda added a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored for Shepherd. Freshman infielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) added a 2-for-3 effort with a run scored and an RBI.

Johnson and Mihalik each had a pair of hits for West Liberty.

Munda (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (6-2) earned the win for the Rams. Callaway Barr (1.2 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) took the loss for the Hilltoppers.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
