Shepherd Baseball Falls to Shippensburg

Box Score SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd University (13-6) dropped a 7-4 decision to Shippensburg (12-15) in non-conference baseball action at Shippensburg on Tuesday.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior outfielder Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) reached base on a walk and later scored on a single by junior first baseman JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary).

Shippensburg responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame with a two-run single by Nick Spangler keying the rally.

The Rams added run in the third as senior shortstop Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) singled, stole second, and later scored on an error.

The Raiders took a 6-2 lead with a pair of runs in the third behind a sacrifice fly by Cash Gladfelter and an RBI-double by Jack Goertzen.

Shepherd cut the lead to 6-3 in the fourth as sophomore designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) walked and later scored on a double off the bat of sophomore third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown).

Shippensburg added a run in the sixth on an RBI-double by Austin Allison.

Shepherd final run came on a solo blast by junior pinch hitter Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West/Mercer CC) in the ninth for his fifth round-tripper of the season.

Hoffman went 3-for-4 and Sarty added a pair of hits to lead the Rams.

Spangler went 3-for-4 and Mike Marcinco added a 3-for-5 effort to pace the Raiders.

Kyle McClintock (5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 Ks, 2 BB) (2-0) earned the win for Shippensburg. Senior starter Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (3.0 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 5 Ks, 1 BB) (3-3) took the loss for the Rams.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to UVa-Wise for a game at 1 p.m. doubleheader.
