Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Urbana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (19-9, 12-4 MEC) swept Urbana (10-21, 5-11 MEC) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Monday. The Rams posted an 11-5 win in game one and added a 9-6 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd plated four runs in the second inning in game one to break a 1-1 tie with a two-run single by senior shortstop Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State) igniting the rally.

The Rams sealed the win in the sixth when junior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) belted a grand slam.

Porter and sophomore third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) each  led the Rams a pair of hits.

Brent West went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Blue Knights.

Freshman pitcher AJ Stead (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) (5.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 5 Ks, 4 BB) (4-1) gained the win, while sophomore reliever Tyler Mister (Belcamp, Md./Harford Tech (CCBC Dundalk) (2.0 IP, 1 H 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) earned the save. Blue Knight starter Mitchell Lawson (6.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 5 Ks 4 BB) (0-3) took the loss,

The Rams plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth in the nightcap to gain a 9-6 come-from-behind victory. Junior outfielder Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) singled and later scored on an error. Porter was hit-by-pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware State). Sarty reached on a single and scored on a two-run blast by sophomore designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU).

Sarty led the Rams with three hits.

Tanner Davis went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored for Urbana.

Senior pitcher Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) (2.0 IP, 3 Ks, 1 BB) (4-0) tossed hitless, scoreless ball over the final two innings to gain the win. Urbana reliever Adam Ramirez (1.0 IP, 3 H, 4 ER,0 Ks, 0 BB) (2-3) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Wheeling Jesuit for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
