Shepherd Softball Splits with UVa-Wise

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (21-12, 14-5) split with UVa-Wise (21-22, 11-11) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Monday. UVa-Wise posted a 6-0 win in in game one, while Shepherd earned the split with a 5-0 triumph in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap as sophomore outfielder Courtney Clemons (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) reached on an error and later scored on a single by freshman shortstop Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).

The Rams added two runs in the third as Konopka led off with a double and scored on a single off the bat of sophomore pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion). Munda later scored on an RBI-single by freshman first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).

Shepherd added two more runs in the fifth on RBI-singles by freshman second baseman Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) and Clemons.

Munda (7.0 IP, 4 H, 7 Ks, 3 BB) (14-4) picked up the win for the Rams. Taylor Brandts (4.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 Ks, 2 BB) (12-7) took the loss.

Alexa Hernandez went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs to lead the Cavaliers to a win in game one. Zoe Millard added a 2-for-4 effort and scored a pair of runs.

Junior outfielder Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East led the Rams with a 2-for-3 effort.

Taylor Brandts (7.0 IP, 3 H, 4 Ks 0 BB) tossed a three-hit shutout for the Cavaliers. Junior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (3.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 4 Ks, 3 BB) (7-6) took the loss for the Rams.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Wheeling Jesuit for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
