Shepherd Softball Sweeps Wheeling Jesuit

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (23-12, 16-5) swept Wheeling Jesuit (27-15, 15-7) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Friday. Shepherd posted an 11-4 win in in game one and added an 8-4 triumph in the nightcap.

Wheeling Jesuit took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one on an RBI-single by Ali Smith.

Shepherd took a 2-1 advantage in the second on  a two-run blast from junior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson).

The Rams plated three runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead. Freshman outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) smacked an RBI-double and freshman first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) added an RBI-single to key the rally.

Wheeling Jesuit countered with three runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4. The Cardinals took advantage of three hits and four errors in the rally.

Shepherd scored six runs in the sixth to seal the victory. Sophomore pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) and junior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) each had two-run singles to key the rally.

Witt went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Rams.

Cassie Holstein, Victoria Scott, and Morgan Stohlman each had a pair of hits for the Cardinals.

Munda (7.0 IP, 10 H,4 R 3 ER,  4 Ks, 2 BB) (15-4) picked up the win for the Rams. Mallory Chapman (5.0 IP, 8 H, 9 ER, 3 Ks, 3 BB) (14-7) took the loss for the Cardinals.

After Wheeling Jesuit took a 4-0 lead in the first in the nightcap, Shepherd rallied with two runs in the third. Junior outfielder Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) hit an RBI-double and Witt added a sacrifice fly.

Shepherd took the lead with three runs in the fourth. A two-run double by Gilligan keyed the rally.

The Rams added three more runs in the sixth with a two-run double by Witt highlighting the scoring.

Sophomore outfielder Courtney Clemons (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) and Konopka each had three hits and scored three runs for the Rams.

Marissa Congelosi went 3-for-4 for the Cardinals.

Munda (6.2 IP, 8 H, 0 R, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (16-4) picked up her second win of the day. Kori Locke (4.0 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 Ks, 5 BB) (7-4) took the loss.

The two teams return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
