Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Wheeling Jesuit

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (21-9, 14-4 MEC) swept Wheeling Jesuit (10-20, 9-9 MEC) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams posted a 2-1 win in game one and used a 23-hit attack en route to a 19-10 win in the nightcap.

The Rams scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning on a two-run single by junior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) in game one and held on for the victory.

The Cardinals rallied with a run in the seventh. Shaun Gaydos reached on a hit-by-pitch and was replaced by pinch runner Christopher Minder. Minder later scored on a fielder's choice.

Senior pitcher Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 7 Ks, 3 BB) (5-0) picked up the win. Dillon Sunnafrank (6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 Ks, 5 BB) (2-1) took the loss for Wheeling Jesuit.

Shepherd plated nine runs in the first inning in nightcap to take control of the contest. Sophomore designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) belted a three-run homer, junior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware State) had a two-run single, and senior shortstop Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State) added two-run triple to highlight the rally.

Heleine went 3-for 6 with seven RBIs to pace the Rams. He added a two-run homer in the fifth. Sophomore third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) also had three hits.

Junior second baseman Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West/Mercer CC) had a three-run blast and Porter added a solo blast for the Rams.

Tony Connacher went 3-for-5 to lead the Cardinals.

Junior pitcher Brandon Hovel (Aberdeen, Md./Kenwood/CCBC Dundalk) (3.0 IP, 2 H 1 ER, 0 Ks, 1 BB) (1-0) picked up the win for the Rams. Cardinals starter Benjamin Standiford (0.2 IP, 8 H, 9 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (2-5) took the loss.

The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
