Shepherd Softball Takes Pair from Wheeling Jesuit

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (25-12, 18-5) swept Wheeling Jesuit (27-17, 15-9) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Saturday. Shepherd recorded a 6-4 win in in game one and added a 9-1 triumph in six innings in the nightcap.

Wheeling Jesuit took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one with a two-run double by Ali Smith highlighting the rally.

Shepherd cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the second. Junior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) led off with a walk and later scored on a single by junior catcher Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville). Freshman pinch runner Tamera Confer (Chesapeake, Va./Atlantic Shores Christian) replaced Staley and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Shepherd took a 4-3 lead in the third inning on an RBI-single by junior outfielder Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) and an RBI-double from freshman first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).

The Rams added run in the fourth on an RBI-single from freshman outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and another in the fifth on a solo blast by Gilligan.

Wheeling Jesuit added a run in the sixth on an RBI-double by Dana Achille.

Konopka and Gilligan had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Morgan Stohlman went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals.

Sophomore pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion)  (7.0 IP, 7 H, 4 ER 2 Ks, 2 BB) (17-4) picked up the win for the Rams. Mallory Chapman (4.1 IP, 11 H, 6 ER, 2 Ks, 1 BB) (14-8) took the loss for the Cardinals.

Shepherd broke a 1-1 in the fourth in the nightcap with seven runs. Sophomore outfielder Courtney Clemons (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) hit a two-run single and Witt contributed an RBI-double to highlight the scoring outburst.

The Rams ended the game in the sixth as Gilligan reached on an error and later scored on a double by Staley.

Clemons led the Rams with a 3-for-3 effort with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

Jackie Cramer went 2-for-3 and drove in a run to lead the Cardinals.

Junior pitcher Kirsten Barstad (Joppa, Md./Mercy) (3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 K, 1 BB) (1-2) picked up the win in relief for the Rams.. Kori Locke (3.1 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 6 Ks, 3 BB) (7-5) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host West Liberty for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
