Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Shepherd University (27-9, 18-4) swept West Liberty (22-16, 11-12) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at West Liberty on Saturday. The Rams recorded a 5-1 win in game one and added a 13-1 win in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning in game one. Senior shortstop
Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State) led off with a bunt single and later scored on a double by junior outfielder
JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary). Sarty eventually scored on a wild pitch. Junior first baseman
Mike Brown (Brandywine, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/Delaware Tech CC) reached on an error and scored on a single by freshman catcher
Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy).
West Liberty scored a run in the fifth on an RBI-single by Michael Adams.
The Rams added a run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Brown and another in the seventh on a solo blast by Porter.
Brown and Porter each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Adams went 2-for-3 to lead the Hilltoppers.
Senior pitcher
Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) (6.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 2 Ks, 1 BB) (6-0) picked up the win. Mark Smyth (7.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 4 Ks, 3 BB) (6-3) took the loss for West Liberty.
The Rams used a 19-hit attack in the nightcap victory.
Sarty went 5-for-6 with three RBIs and a run scored, while junior outfielder
Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) went 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to pace the Rams.
Junior second baseman
Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West/Mercer CC) added a 3-for-3 effort with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored and Brown had a pair of hits including a three-run homer.
West Liberty plated its only run in the fourth as DJ Busby led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Meyer,
Junior pitcher
John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (9.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 4 Ks, 1 BB) (6-2) went the distance to gain the win. Greg Stagani (4.0 IP, 10 H, 8 ER, 4 Ks, 2 BB) (6-2) took the loss for the Hilltoppers.
The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at West Liberty.
