Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Shepherd University (28-10, 19-5) split with West Liberty (23-17, 12-13) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at West Liberty on Sunday. The Rams recorded an 8-3 win in game one, while West Liberty had a 12-4 win in the nightcap.
West Liberty took a 1-0 lead in game one in the third inning behind an RBI-single from DJ Busby.
Sophomore third baseman
Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) belted a solo blast in the fourth to tie the game.
West Liberty retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a Justice Jackson RBI-single before Shepherd tied the game in the fifth on a homer by junior outfielder
JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary).
Shepherd plated five runs in the seventh to seal the win. Sarty belted a three-run homer to key the rally.
West Liberty plated an unearned run in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Sarty went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in to pace the Rams.
Senior starter
Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 Ks, 0 BB) (5-4) picked up the win for the Rams. Parker Dyson (1.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 0 Ks, 0 BB) (1-1) took the loss.
Tim Hughes and Michael Adams each had a pair of hits and hit a two-run homer to lead West Liberty in the nightcap win.
Senior shortstop
Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State) had a pair of hits and belted a solo homer to lead the Rams. Porter has a team-best 16 round-trippers on the season.
Yale Hughes (9.0 IP, 11 H 4 R, 3 ER, 5 Ks, 5 BB) (3-5) picked up the win for the Hilltoppers.
Freshman pitcher Colin Benner (Clear Brook, Va./Millbrook) (2.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (4-2) took the loss for the Rams.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Notre Dame for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
