Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Shepherd University (33-14, 22-7 MEC) dropped a pair of games to #24-ranked University of Charleston (42-7, 29-3 MEC) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Charleston on Sunday. Charleston recorded a 2-0 win in in game one and added a 6-1 win in the nightcap.
Charleston plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning in game one to claim the victory. Allison Evans had an RBI-triple and later scored on a single by Rachel Toppings.
Ali Burdette (7.0 IP, 3 H, 6 Ks, 4 BB) (25-2) gained the win for the Golden Eagles. Junior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 Ks, 0 BB) (10-7) took the loss.
Kelly Browning hit a three-run homer in the first inning in the nightcap to help Charleston gain the sweep.
Shepherd scored its run in the sixth as freshman second baseman Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) led off with a walk and later scored on a ground out by freshman outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).
Jenna Evans went 3-for-3 to lead the Golden Eagles.
Jessie Rowe (7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (17-4) earned the win. Sophomore starter Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (0.1 IP 5 H, 4 ER, 0 Ks, 2 BB) (21-5) took the loss.
Shepherd, the Mountain East Conference North Division champions, will face UVa-Wise on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in first day action of the MEC Tournament in Troutville, Va.
