Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (15-8, 9-3 MEC) split with Concord (13-15, 7-5 MEC) in Mountain East Conference baseball action at Fairfax Field on Monday. The Rams gained a 10-1 win in game one, while Concord posted a 3-1 victory in the nightcap
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the third inning in game one as senior shortstop Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State) tripled and junior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) followed with a home run.
The Rams added three runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Sophomore designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) had an RBI-double, while senior second baseman Zane Bard (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg/Mount St. Mary's) and Sarty each contributed an RBI-single.
Shepherd added five more runs in the fifth with a three-run homer by Heleine keying the rally.
Concord plated a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Chad Frazier.
Porter went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, while Heleine had a 2-for-4 effort with four RBIs and two runs scored. Sarty went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
Brad Sullivan, Jordan Clark, and Frazier each had a pair of hits for the Mountain Lions.
Junior pitcher John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (7.0 IP, 10 H, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 1 BB) (3-2) went the distance to gain the win. Troy Beckner (5.0 IP, 13 H 8 R, 6 ER, 5 Ks, 2 BB) (1-5) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
Trevor Wiersma had an RBI-single in the fourth to give Concord a 1-0 lead in the nightcap.
Paul Williams hit a solo blast in the fifth to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 advantage.
Jordan Clark added an RBI-single in the sixth to up the Concord lead to 3-0.
The Rams plated a run in the ninth as freshman catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) led off with a single and was replaced by junior pinch-runner Darius Jones (Lusby, Md./Patuxent). Jones later scored on an RBI-single off the bat of junior first baseman Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West/Mercer CC).
Junior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware State), Sarty, Hamel, and Kirk each had two hits for the Rams.
Frazier and Wiersma each had a pair of hits for the Mountain Lions.
Concord starter Nate Werner (8.2 IP, 9 H, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 0 BB) (3-3) gained the win for the Mountain Lions. Damon Frazier got the game's final out to pick up the save. Senior pitcher Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (7.0 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 0 BB) (3-4) suffered the loss for the Rams.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Shippensburg for a single game at 3 p.m.
