Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (16-8) held off Shippensburg (14-18) for a 6-4 victory in non-conference baseball action at Fairfax Field on Tuesday.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by junior outfielder
JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior outfielder
Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware State).
The Rams added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly from freshman catcher
Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy).
Junior second baseman
Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West/Mercer CC) scored on an infield error in the fourth and belted a two-run double in the fifth to help Shepherd gain a 6-0 advantage
The Raiders scored three runs in the seventh with a two-run single by Grant Hoover igniting the rally.
Shippensburg added a run in the ninth on an RBI-single by Dalton Hoiles.
Junior outfielder
Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando), Sarty, and Farley each had a a pair of hits for the Rams.
Hoiles went 3-for-5 to lead the Raiders.
Senior pitcher
Austin Guy (Leonardtown, Md./Wheeling Jesuit) (6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 9 Ks, 2 BB) (1-0) gained the win for the Rams. He got relief help from sophomore reliever
Tyler Mister (Belcamp, Md./Harford Tech (CCBC Dundalk) (2.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 Ks, 1 BB). Shippensburg starter Seth LeFever (3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 Ks, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Urbana for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
