Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.– Shepherd University (18-9, 12-3) split with Fairmont State (14-16, 9-7) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Tuesday. The Rams posted an 11-3 win in game one, while Fairmont State recorded a 12-4 win in the nightcap.
Fairmont State took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one with a two-run single by Joni Tyree keying the rally.
Freshman shortstop
Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) belted a three-run homer in the second inning to key a five run rally.
The Rams added five more runs in the fourth with a three-run double by junior catcher
Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) keyed the scoring outburst.
Shepherd completed the scoring in the fifth as freshman shortstop
Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) led off with a single and later scored on an error.
Konopka went 3-for-4, while junior outfielder
Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) and freshman outfielder
Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) each added 2-for-3 efforts.
Courtney Iacobacci went 2-for-3 for the Falcons.
Sophomore pitcher
Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 Ks, 2 BB) (11-4) picked up the win for the Rams. Devin Williams (3.2 Ip, 10 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 1 K, 3 Bb) (6-6) took the loss for the Falcons.
Iacobacci went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Fairmont State in the nightcap.
Munda and Staley each drove in a pair of runs for the Rams. Sophomore outfielder
Courtney Clemons (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) and Buckworth each recorded a pair of hits.
Rachel Bias (7.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 Ks, 1 BB) (4-5) gained the win for the Falcons. Junior pitcher
Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (1.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 2 Ks, 1 BB) (7-4) took the loss for the Rams.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Shippensburg for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
