Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) went 5-for-5 with four runs scored and an RBI to lead Shepherd University (34-13) to a 14-10 win over Concord (23-26) in first day action of the MEC Baseball Tournament at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley on Thursday.
Concord took a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Chad Frazier and Trevor Wiersma each drove in a run.
Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the frame with four runs. Senior shortstop
Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State) belted a two-run homer, while sophomore designated hitter
Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) had an RBI-double and later scored on a single from freshman catcher
Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy).
The Rams took a 5-3 lead in the second on an RBI-single by junior outfielder
Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware State).
Concord tied the game in the third as Jordan Clark singled and later scored when Holt Cassada grounded into a double play.
Shepherd took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI-single from Carney.
The Rams added a pair of runs in the fourth on an RBI-double by Heleine and a sacrifice fly by Hamel.
Concord plated five runs on six hits to take a 10-8 lead. Clark and Cassada each hit two-run singles to key the rally.
Shepherd cut the lead to 10-9 when Heleine walked and later scored on a single by sophomore third baseman

Shepherd scored three runs in the seventh to take a lead. Carney walked and later scored on an infield error. Junior outfielder
JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) added an RBI-single and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Rams added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Sarty drove in a run when he was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and Farley added a sacrifice fly to plate Carney, who reached on a single.
Porter and Farley each added three hits for the Rams.
Chad Frazier went 4-for-6 with a pair of runs scored to pace Concord.
Senior reliever
Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 Ks, 3 BB) (6-4) earned the win for the Rams. Damon Frazier (5.0 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (4-6) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
The Rams return to tournament action on Friday when they face the loser of today's Notre Dame-Glenville State game at 3 p.m. at Linda K. Epling Stadium.
