Box Score 2 BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Shepherd University (32-12, 23-7) swept Fairmont State (20-28, 10-20) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex on Sunday. The Rams recorded a 5-3 win in game one and earned a 9-5 triumph in 10 innings in the nightcap.
Shepherd took as 1-0 lead in the third inning in game one as junior outfielder
Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) led off with a single and later scored on a ground out by junior outfielder
JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary).
The Rams increased their lead to 2-0 in the fifth when junior second baseman
Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West/Mercer CC) led off with a walked and eventually scored on a single by Sarty.
Fairmont State rallied with three runs in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. Alex Levitan had a two-run double to key the rally.
Shepherd plated three runs in the top of the seventh to gain the win. Sophomore designated hitter
Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) smacked a two-run double and Sarty added an RBI-single to highlight the scoring.
Carney and Sarty each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Josh Wine had two hits for the Falcons.
Senior pitcher
Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 8 Ks, 0 BB) (8-0) picked up the complete game win. Austin Ransom (5.0 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 5 Ks, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss for Fairmont State.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap as Carney reach on a single and later scored on an error.
The Rams added a run in in the second as junior first baseman
Mike Brown (Brandywine, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/Delaware Tech CC) singled and later scored on a double off the bat of freshman catcher
Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy).
The Rams scored a run in the fifth as senior shortstop
Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State) singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Brown.
Fairmont State answered back with four runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the frame. Austin Norman, Jacob Whitmore, Nic Rush and Levitan each drove in a run for the Falcons.
Shepherd tied the game in the seventh as Sarty singled, stole second and third, and later scored on a single by junior outfielder
Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware State).
The Rams scored in the 10th to pull away for the win. Brown and Sarty each hit two-run singles to key the rally.
Fairmont State plated a run in the bottom of the 10th as Levitan walked and later scored when he stole home.
Carney and Sarty each had three hits to lead a 14-hit attack for the Rams.
Whitmore had three hits to lead the Falcons.
Sophomore pitcher
Tyler Mister (Belcamp, Md./Harford Tech/CCBC Dundalk) (5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER , 2 K, 1 BB) (2-0) gained the win. Mark McKee (1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 2 Ks, 3 BB) (2-3) took the loss for the Falcons.
The two teams return to action on Monday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field for Senior Day.
Notes: JJ Sarty set a new Shepherd single game record with five stolen bases in the nightcap, surpassing the old mark of four, shared by Collin Brown (3-4-06), Scott Broyles (3-29-80), and John Fletcher (3-22-83) … Sarty also broke the SU single season mark for stolen bases with 33, eclipsing the old mark of 28 shared by Kyle Porter (2014) and Michael Lott (2013).
