Shepherd Baseball Splits with Fairmont State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (33-13, 24-8) split with Fairmont State (21-29, 11-21) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Senior Day on Monday. The Rams recorded a 12-6 win in game one, while Fairmont State grabbed an 11-6 win in the nightcap.

Fairmont State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as Josh Wine led off with a double and later scored on an infield error.

Shepherd tied the game in the bottom of the frame as junior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) singled, stole second base, and scored on a double off the bat of junior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware State).

Shepherd plated four runs in the second on an RBI-double by senior shortstop Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State), a two-run single by Sarty, and an RBI-single by Farley.

The Falcons cut the lead to 5-4 with three runs in the third. Nic Rush had a two-run single and Jacob Whitmore added an RBI-single.

Freshman catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) belted a solo blast in the third to give the Rams a 6-4 advantage.

The Falcon took advantage of two hits and two errors to score a pair of runs in the fourth to tie the game at 6-6.

Shepherd scored six runs in the fourth to secure the victory. Junior outfielder Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) belted a solo homer and sophomore third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) added a two-run single to highlight the rally.

Sarty went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored to pace the Rams. Farley and Hamel both added a pair of hits.

Josh Wine went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Falcons. Whitmore added two hits.

Freshman pitcher AJ Stead (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) (4.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 5 Ks, 2 BB) (5-1) gained the win.  Falcon starter Zac Burch (3.1 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 1 K, 4 BB) (2-6) took the loss,

Shepherd tied the game in the bottom of the first on a solo blast by Sarty.

Fairmont State took a 2-1 lead in the second as Whitmore led off with a single and later scored on a ground out by Adam Meeker.

The Rams scored four runs in the second to take a 5-2 lead. Shepherd got an RBI-double by senior first baseman Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC), a two-run single from senior second baseman Zane Bard (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg/Mount St. Mary's), and a sacrifice fly from Sarty  to fuel the rally.

Fairmont State tied the game with three runs in the third as Philip Longnecker and Whitmore each had RBI-singles.

Shepherd retook the lead in the fourth as Porter led off with a triple and scored on a single by Sarty.

Austin Norman hit a solo homer for the Falcons in the fifth to tie the game at 6-6.

Fairmont State took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the sixth. Whitmore and Rush each had RBI-singles.

The Falcons added three more runs in the eighth on a two-run double by Longnecker and an RBI-double from Norman.

Whitmore had three hits, while Longnecker and Norman each drove in three runs to pace the Falcons.

Sarty went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead the Rams.

Falcon pitcher Logan Johnson (9.0 IP, 12 H, 6 ER, 4 Ks, 4 BB) (6-4) gained the win. Senior reliever Austin Guy (Leonardtown, Md./Wheeling Jesuit) (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 Ks, 1 BB (1-2) took the loss.

The Rams, the top-seeded team in the North Division, return to action on Thursday when they face Concord, the third-seeded team in the South Division, at 11 a.m. at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley in first round action of the MEC Tournament.
