Shepherd Football Announces Staff Changes

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University head football coach Monte Cater recently announced several changes to the Shepherd football staff.  Former Shepherd standout and assistant Jesse Correll returns as the pass game coordinator/quarterback/wide receivers coach, Sam Daniels takes over as the defensive line coach, while former Shepherd assistant Chad Byers returns to coach the inside linebackers.

Correll comes back to Shepherd after spending the 2015 season as the offensive coordinator at Clarion University. He helped the Golden Eagles break eight offensive school records en route to a 7-4 mark.

Correll previously coached at Stevenson University where he helped guide the Mustangs to an 8-3 record in 2014. In four seasons in Stevenson, Correll coached 10 All-Middle Atlantic Conference selections on offense. In 41 games under Correll, the Mustangs had five players rush for over 100 yards a total of 22 times and five players total over 100 yards receiving 11 times.

Prior to coaching at Stevenson, Correll  spent three seasons as the wide receivers coach at Shepherd from 2007-09. The team went 10-2 in 2007, won the WVIAC title ,and qualified for the NCAA D-II Playoffs.
 
A 2005 Shepherd University graduate, Correll was a two-time All-WVIAC second team selection at wide receiver and still ranks in the top 10 in school history in receptions (98), receiving yards (1,760) and touchdown receptions (13).  As a senior in 2004, Correll totaled 702 receiving yards helping the Rams win the 2004 WVIAC championship. He also earned a master's degree in 2009 from Shepherd in student development and administration.

Sam Daniels comes to Shepherd after spending the past two seasons as defensive line coach at Frostburg State University.
 
Daniels coached at the Apprentice School from 2012-13. In 2013, Daniels served as the defensive coordinator, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. The Builders registered 12 sacks, recovered 10 fumbles, and picked off seven passes.
 
In 2012, Daniels served as the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for Apprentice. The Builders posted 14 sacks, recovered 15 fumbles, and intercepted eight passes.
 
Daniels was a two-time All-American and four-year member of the James Madison University football team. In his final two years, Daniels was a two-time team captain, two-time All-CAA defensive line honoree, and two-time All-American. Over his final two seasons, he finished with 108 tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks. As a senior, he was the Dukes' Defensive MVP and Lineman of the Year.

Returning to the Shepherd coaching staff is Charlottesville native Chad Byers.

Byers, who spent the 2015 season as a defensive assistant at Furman. will coach the inside linebackers.

Byers previously coached at Shepherd from 2013-14 as the wide receivers coach. The receiving corps amassed 2,023 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in 2013 and allowed the Shepherd quarterbacks to complete over 60 percent of their passes. The 2014 group had 2,436 receiving yards with 19 touchdown grabs as the quarterbacks completed over 66 percent of their passes.

A 2012 graduate of James Madison, Byers began his collegiate career as a quarterback and led the Dukes' scout team as a freshman before switching to defense where he lettered four years at linebacker.

Byers was an All-State quarterback at Blue Ridge (Va.) School where he played for former Shepherd assistant coach Daryl Hayes.
