Second-Ranked Fairmont State Holds Off Shepherd Men

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Jason Jolly scored a game-high 26 points to lead second-ranked Fairmont State (17-0, 11-0 MEC) to an 86-81 win over Shepherd University (10-7, 7-4 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Thursday night.

Junior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) led the Rams with 20 points. Sophomore forward Gavin McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) added a career-high 19 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while junior guard Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) added 17 points and tied junior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) with a game-high six assists.

Senior guard Niam Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) was also in double figures with 10 points.

Thomas Wimbush added 14 points, while D'Ondre Stockman had 13 for the Falcons.

Fairmont State had a 43-40 lead at the break as Stockman (9), Jolly (8) and Shammgod Wells (8) combined for 25 first half points.

After Shepherd closed to within four points at 70-66 following a jumper by Carr with 8:07 left in the game, Fairmont State went on a 7-0 run to extend its lead to 11 points and the Rams were unable to recover.

Shepherd connected on 54.5 percent (30-55) from the floor with a 42.9 percent (9-21) performance from beyond the arc. The Rams hit on 66.7 percent (12-18) of their free throws.

Fairmont State shot 44.3 percent (27-61) from the floor with a 34.6 percent effort (9-26) from three-point range for the game. The Fighting Falcons shot 79.3 percent (23-29) from the charity stripe.

Shepherd had a 37-34 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 12 turnovers and committed 19.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Glenville State for a 4 p.m. game.
