Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. – Junior guard
Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) scored a season and game-high 29 points to pace the Rams, but Concord (2-7, 1-4 MEC) withstood a late rally from Shepherd University (4-9, 1-4 MEC) and held on for a 72-69 victory in MEC women's basketball action at Concord on Tuesday.
Arden hit on 11-of-17 field goals with a 2-of-4 effort from beyond the arc. She was 5-of-5 from the foul line.
Senior guard
Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) added 15 points and a game-high seven assists. Junior guard
Tiffany McKinney (Edgewater, Md./South River/Anne Arundel CC) tossed in 11 points, while senior forward
Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) had six points and seven rebounds.
Danielle Catron had 19 points and Alexis Lowery added 14 points and a game-high five steals for Concord. Lindsey Overbey had nine points and eight rebounds.
Concord led by as many as nine points in the fourth period, but Shepherd used an 7-2 run to get to within four points at 57-53 after a pair of free throws by Mason with 6:44 left.
Arden hit a layup with 34 seconds left to tie the game at 68-68, but Lowery sunk a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining to give Concord a 70-68 lead.
Myers hit 1-of-2 free throws with two seconds left to pull the Rams to within a point, but Catron drained a pair of free throws for the Mountain Lions in the final second to cap the win.
Shepherd shot 43.3 percent (26-60) from the floor with a 35.3 percent effort (6-17) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 52.4 percent (11-21) from the charity stripe.
Concord connected on 49 percent (25-51) from the floor with a 12.5 percent (1-8) performance from beyond the arc. The Mountain Lions hit on 80.8 percent (21-26) of their free throws.
Concord had a 36-30 advantage in rebounds. Shepherd forced 25 turnovers and committed 16.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to UVa-Wise for a 2 p.m. contest.
