Shepherd Men’s Basketball Falls to Gannon

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Zay Jackson scored 21 points and Jair Green added 18 to lead Gannon (1-1) to a 79-69 win over Shepherd University (0-2) in final day action of the Clarion Hotel Conference Challenge at the Butcher Center on Saturday.

Senior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) led the Rams with a game-high 29 points. He hit on 12-of-17 field goals with a 1-of-1 effort from three-point range. He was 4-of-4 from the foul line.

Senior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) was also in double figures for the Rams with 12 points. Junior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Evan Phoenix added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Knights.

Gannon had a 37-34 lead at halftime as Jackson (9) and Phoenix (8) combined for 17 first-half points.

Shepherd connected on 45.8 percent (27-59) from the floor with a 27.3  percent (6-22) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 64.2 percent (9-14) of their free throws.

Gannon shot 51.6 percent (32-62) from the floor with a 50 percent effort (6-12) from three-point range. The Golden Knights shot 75 percent (9-12) from the charity stripe.

Gannon had a 38-32 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced eight turnovers and committed nine.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Holy Family for an 8 p.m. game.
