Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) scored 23 points and junior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West York Area) added 20 to lead Shepherd University (2-0) to an 85-61 win over Shaw University (0-2) in women's basketball action at Winston-Salem State on Sunday.
Arden hit on 6-of-14 field goals with a 1-of-4 effort from three-point range. She was 10-of-10 from the foul line. Lankford hit on 10-of-12 shots. Arden added six assists and five steals, while Lankford posted six assists, six rebounds, and three steals.
Senior guard Tiffany McKinney (Edgewater, Md./South River/Anne Arundel CC) and junior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) each added 13 points for the Rams. Freshman forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
LaQuisha Taylor scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed eight boards for Shaw. Chelsea Long added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Shepherd had a 37-34 lead at the break behind 14 first-half points from Arden.
Shepherd shot 51.6 percent (33-64) from the floor with a 44.4 percent effort (8-18) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 68.8 percent (11-16) from the charity stripe.
Shaw hit on 42.2 percent (27-64) from the floor with a 16.7 percent (3-18) performance from beyond the arc. The Bears connected on 36.4 percent (4-11) of their free throws.
Shepherd had a 40-34 edge in rebounding. Shepherd forced 22 turnovers and committed 15.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Goldey-Beacom at 6 p.m. at the Butcher Center in the home opener.
