Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Kier Anderson had 20 points and Austin Howard added 16 to lead Charleston (3-2, 1-1 MEC) to an 82-80 win over Shepherd University (1-4, 0-2 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at Charleston on Monday night.
Senior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) led the Rams with 20 points and eight rebounds. Carr hit on 7-of-15 field goals with a 4-of-7 effort from three-point range. He was 2-for-2 from the foul line.
Sophomore guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) added 16 points and four assists, while senior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) chipped in with 14 points.
Shaq Speights had 14 points and Lamont McManus added 12 for the Golden Eagles.
Charleston had a 32-31 lead at halftime.
Shepherd rallied from a six-point deficit late in the second half to get to within a point at 81-80 after a three-pointer by Davis with seven seconds remaining. Howard hit 1-of-2 free throws in the final seconds as UC held on for the win.
Shepherd connected on 51.7 percent (31-60) from the floor with a 48 percent (12-25) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 75 percent (6-8) of their free throws.\
Charleston shot 52.7 percent (29-55) from the floor with a 38.1 percent effort (8-21) from three-point range. The Golden Eagles shot 66.7 percent (16-24) from the charity stripe.
Charleston had a 32-26 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 10 turnovers and committed 10.
The Rams return to action on Nov. 29 when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
