Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) had game highs of 28 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists to lead Shepherd University (4-6) to an 86-76 win over Chestnut Hill (1-9) in men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Carr was 10-of-14 from the floor with a 2-of-2 effort from three-point range. He was 6-of-8 from the foul line.
Sophomore guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) and senior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) each added 15 points. Junior guard Derek McKnight (Teaneck, NJ/Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) had nine, while senior forward Gavin McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) chipped in with eight.
Junior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) contributed seven points and six rebounds.
Liban Awl scored a team-high 26 points for the Griffins. Cartier Talford added 19 points, Demetrius Isaac had 13, and Tony Toplyn Jr. had 11.
Shepherd opened the game on a 26-9 run and held a 47-40 advantage at the break. Carr (16) and Davis (12) combined for 28 points in the first half.
Chestnut Hill opened the second half on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to three points at 49-46 after a jumper by Isaac with 16:49 left. Shepherd proceeded on an 11-2 run to take a 12-point lead at 60-48 with 12:39 remaining to take control of the game. McTavish hit a pair of three-pointers to key the run.
Shepherd connected on 52.7 percent (29-55) from the floor with a 50 percent (13-26) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 78.9 percent (15-19) of their free throws.
Chestnut Hill shot 46.8 percent (29-62) from the floor with a 58.8 percent effort (10-17) from three-point range. The Griffins shot 66.7 percent (8-12) from the charity stripe.
Shepherd had a 35-27 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced six turnovers and committed 12.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Virginia Union for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
