Shepherd Men Knock Off Virginia Union

RICHMOND, Va. – Senior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) scored a game-high 16 points to lead Shepherd University to a 62-56 win over Virginia Union in men's basketball action at Virginia Union on Tuesday night.

Carr was 6-of-13 from the floor with a 1-of-5 effort from three-point range. He was 3-of-4 from the foul line.

Senior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 15 points, while sophomore guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) contributed 14 points, four assists, and a game-high four steals.

Junior guard Derek McKnight (Teaneck, NJ/Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) dished out a team-high six assists, while junior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) had a team-high six rebounds.

Kori Cooley had 12 points and seven assists, while Todd Hughes added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Panthers. Jordan Peebles grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

The Rams had a 32-30 lead at the break as Lang (11) and Carr (9) teamed to score 20 points in the first half.

A close game throughout, Virginia Union (7-7) got to within three points at 57-54 after a three-pointer by Micah Thomas with 1:51 left in regulation. Shepherd (5-6) closed the game on a 5-2 run to capture the win. Carr provided all the scoring for the Rams during the run with a pair of dunks and a free throw.\

Shepherd connected on 40.4 percent (23-56) from the floor with a 39.4 percent (13-33) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 60 percent (3-5) of their free throws.

Virginia Union shot 40.7 percent (22-54) from the floor with a 36.8 percent effort (7-19) from three-point range. The Panthers shot 62.5 percent (5-8) from the charity stripe.

Virginia Union had a 42-29 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 18 turnovers and committed 10.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, Dec. 30 when they host Lincoln for a 4 p.m. contest.
