Box Score ETTRICK, Va. – Alexis Smith scored a game-high 28 points to lead Virginia State to an 85-25 win over Shepherd University in non-conference women's basketball action at Virginia State on Saturday.
Smith hit on 10-of-17 field goals with a 7-of-10 performance from beyond the arc. She was 1-of-2 from the line. Smith also contributed game highs of seven assists and five steals.
Junior guard
Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) led the Rams (6-6) with eight points. Freshman forward
Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added six points, seven rebounds, and a game-high two blocked shots, while junior forward
Liz Moormann (New Market, Md./Oakdale) had five points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Keyana Brown added 13 points, while Dionna Marcus had 12 for the Trojans (12-0). Chrisanna Brown had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Mia Fitts tossed in 11 points as five Virginia State players scored in double figures.
Virginia State had a 40-10 lead at halftime as Smith tossed in 14 first-half points for the Trojans behind a 4-of-6 effort from three-point range.
Shepherd shot 21.1 percent (8-38) from the floor with a 9.1 percent effort (1-11) from three-point range for the game. The Rams drained 72.7 percent (8-11) of their free throws.
Virginia State hit on 45.8 percent (33-72) from the floor with a 46.2 percent (12-26) performance from beyond the arc. The Trojans connected on 63.6 percent (7-11) of their free throws.
Virginia State had a 38-31 edge in rebounds. The Rams forced nine turnovers and committed 27.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host Concord for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
