Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. – Brent Pegram and Haywood Highsmith each scored 20 points to lead ninth-ranked Wheeling Jesuit (8-1, 5-1 MEC) to a 67-62 win over Shepherd University (3-6, 2-4 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday.
Senior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) led the Rams with 18 points. Carr was 7-of-17 from the floor with a 3-of-7 effort from three-point range. He was 1-of-1 from the foul line. He added seven rebounds and a game-high five assists
Sophomore guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) added 17 points, while senior forward Gavin McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) had 12.
Drake Goddard tossed in 11 points and Preston Boswell had 10 for the Cardinals
Shepherd opened the game on a 17-4 run and held a 33-26 lead at the break. Lang, Carr, and McTavish each tallied seven points in the first half.
Wheeling Jesuit rallied to take the lead for good at 62-59 on a three-pointer by Highsmith with 3:20 left in the game. The Cardinals got a dunk from Highsmith and hit 3-of-5 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Shepherd connected on 39.1 percent (25-64) from the floor with a 31 percent (9-29) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 75 percent (3-4) of their free throws.
Wheeling Jesuit shot 40.4 percent (23-57) from the floor with a 34.6 percent effort (9-26) from three-point range. The Cardinals shot 80 percent (12-15) from the charity stripe.
Wheeling Jesuit had a 41-34 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 13 turnovers and committed 11.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Chestnut Hill at 4 p.m. for Camper Appreciation Day.
