Third-Ranked West Liberty Tops Shepherd Men

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Five players scored in double figures to lead third-ranked West Liberty (20-1, 13-1) to a 97-75 win over Shepherd University (13-8, 10-5 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday.

Junior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) scored a game-high 24 points to pace the Rams.

Carr connected on 10-of-16 field goals with a 2-of-4 effort from three point range. He was 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. He also had a team-high six assists.

Junior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 17 points, while freshman guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) tossed in 11 points.

Dan Monteroso scored 18 points, while David Dennis and Devin Hoehn each tossed in 17 for the Hilltoppers. Zac Grossenbacher added 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Brady Arnold chipped in with 11 points.

West Liberty had a 50-38 advantage at halftime.

Shepherd rallied to within four points at 56-52 after a three-pointer by junior guard Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) with 14:30 remaining.

West Liberty took a double-digit lead for good at 70-58 on a three-pointer by Grossenbacher with 10:31 left and Shepherd was unable to recover.

Shepherd connected on 47.4 percent (27-57) from the floor with a 35.7 percent (10-28) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 73.3 percent (11-15) of their free throws.

West Liberty shot 53.7 percent (36-67) from the floor with a 43.2 percent effort (16-37) from three-point range. The Hilltoppers shot 81.8 percent (9-11) from the charity stripe.

West Liberty had a 37-30 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced six turnovers and committed nine.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Wheeling Jesuit for a 4 p.m. game.
