Shepherd Softball Splits Pair at Captain D’s Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Shepherd University split a pair of games at the Captain D's Classic in softball action at University of North Georgia on Saturday. The Rams dropped a 9-1 decision to eighth-ranked University of North Georgia in an early game and rallied for a 7-5 win over Seton Hill in a later contest.

Trailing 1-0 against Seton Hill in the second inning, Shepherd tied the game on a solo blast by sophomore outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax).

Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Cox reached on a walk and later score d on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Halifax).

The Griffins scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run triple by Abbie Thrower keying the rally.

Shepherd cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth when senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee).

Seton Hill took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homer by Christiana Skrabak.

The Rams plated three runs on one hit and an error in the sixth to take a 6-5 advantage.

Shepherd added an insurance run in the seventh when Gilligan reached on an error and scored on a single by Cox.

Cox went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and a pair of runs scored to pace the Rams.

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (1-1) (3.0 IP, 2 H. 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) picked up the win in relief for the Rams. Amanda Huff (0-1) (3.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) took the loss for the Griffins.

Munda (5.2 IP, 10 H 7 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) took the loss against UNG. Kylee Smith (7-1) (6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 12 K, 2 BB) earned the win for North Georgia.

Clinging to a 2-0 lead, the Nighthawks plated five runs in the sixth inning to pull away for the victory.

Cox led off the seventh with a walk and later scored on an infield error.

Alishia Frierson went 3-for-4 and Kaylyn Anthony added a 2-for-4 effort with three runs batted in to lead UNG.

Konopka doubled in the sixth for Shepherd's only hit.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they face Seton Hill at 10 a.m. and North Georgia at noon.
