Shepherd Softball Goes 1-1 at Captain D’s Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Shepherd University (2-2) split a pair of games at the Captain D's Classic in softball action at University of North Georgia on Sunday. The Rams posted a 7-3 win over Seton Hill in an early game and later dropped an 8-0 decision to eighth-ranked University of North Georgia.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Seton Hill as sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Halifax) led off with a single and later scored on a single by sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee).

The Rams added four runs in the second behind a two-run homer by sophomore outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) and a two-run double by Konopka.

Seton Hill cut the lead to 5-1 in the third on an RBI-single by Christiana Skrabak.

The Griffins made in a 5-2 game in the fourth as Abbie Thrower walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Ashely Boehm. Boehm later scored when Brooke Bower was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.

The Rams added a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI-double by junior pinch hitter Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) and an RBI-double by Konopka.

Seton Hill added a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Ashley Perillo.

Konopka went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to pace the Rams.

Skrabak went 3-for-4 for Seton Hill (0-3).

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 K, 4 BB) (1-0) earned the complete game win for the Rams. McKayla Kroll (2.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Griffins.

The Nighthawks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on solo homers by Sydney Sprague and Stephanie Hartness.

North Georgia added three runs on three hits and three Shepherd errors in the second. Hartness had an RBI-double and later scored on a wild pitch to help key the rally.

UNG added two more runs in the third as Hannah McSwain drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Sprague added an RBI-single.

The Nighthawks completed the scoring with a run in the fourth on an RBI-single by Shelby Hammontree.

Sprague went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored to lead North Georgia (13-4).

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (1-2) (0.0 IP, 2 H. 2 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) took the loss for the Rams. Kylee Smith (8-1) (4.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 7 K, 1 BB) earned the win for North Georgia.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to the Shaw University Tournament to face Chowan at 4 p.m.
