Shepherd Men Downed by Second-Ranked Fairmont State

Box Score FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Thomas Wimbush scored a game-high 32 points to lead second-ranked Fairmont State (27-1, 21-1 MEC) to a 95-80 win over to Shepherd University (18-10, 15-7 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at Fairmont on Saturday.

Wimbush hit on 11-of-21 field goals with a 6-of-13 effort from three-point range. He was 4-of-5 from the foul line.

Junior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) led the Rams with 27 points. He was connected on 10-of-19 field goals with a 5-of-11 effort from beyond the arc. He was 2-of-3 from the charity stripe.
Davis also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Senior guard Niam Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) added 17 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Junior guard Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) tossed in 12 points, while junior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) had 10.

Shammgod Wells had 19 points and Matt Bingaya contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Falcons. Vonte Montgomery had 12 points and Trevor Andrew-Evans had 10 as all five Falcon starters hit for double figures.

Fairmont State had a 45-39 lead at the break as Wells (16) and Wimbush (11) combined for 27 first half points.

The Rams trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half. Shepherd used a 13-6 run late in the second half to get to within seven points at 81-74 after a three-pointer by Davis with 3:08 remaining. Fairmont State responded with a 5-0 run and Shepherd was unable to recover.

Shepherd connected on 48.5 percent (32-66) from the floor with a 37.9 percent (11-29) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 50 percent (5-10) of their free throws.

Fairmont State shot 44.9 percent (35-78) from the floor with a 37.1 percent effort (13-35) from three-point range. The Fighting Falcons shot 75 percent (12-16) from the charity stripe.

Fairmont State had a 45-37 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced seven turnovers and committed 14.

The Rams wait word on pairings for next week's Mountain East Conference Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center.
