Shepherd Women’s Lacrosse Edged by Shippensburg in Opener

Box Score SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Allison Fugate scored a free position goal with 27 seconds left in regulation to lift Shippensburg University (2-0) to a 9-8 win over Shepherd (0-1) in women's lacrosse action at Shippensburg on Tuesday.

Senior attacker Brooke Hunley (Monrovia, Md./Linganore) led the Rams with three goals. Senior midfielder Haley Price (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) added two goals, while senior attacker Alex Green (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) had a goal and an assist.

Junior midfielder Courtney Matthews (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) and junior midfielder Sarah Wendt (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) each tallied a goal, while freshman attacker Lillian Funke (Hagerstown, Md./Boonsboro) posted an assist.

Amanda Franke led the Raiders with three goals. Ali Harclerode and Fugate each added a pair of goals.

The game was tied at 2-2 at halftime.

The Raiders scored the first three goals of the second half to take a 6-2 advantage.

Shepherd answered back with a pair of goals (Wendt, Price) to cut the lead to 6-4 before Shippensburg reeled off three straight goals to take an 8-5 lead. Shepherd responded with three consecutive goals (Green, Hunley, Matthews) to tie the game.

Shippensburg had an 11-8 edge in draw controls and a 25-19 advantage in ground balls. Shepherd was 20-of-23 in clears, while Shippensburg was 16-of-17.

Junior goalkeeper Casey Hickman (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) recorded 14 saves for the Rams, while Bridgette Morrissey had four saves for the Raiders.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Mercyhurst for a 1 p.m. contest in the home opener.
