Shepherd Baseball Falls to UNC Pembroke in Season Opener

Box Score PEMBROKE, N.C. – UNC Pembroke used a 14-hit attack en route to a 12-1 win over Shepherd University in baseball action at UNC Pembroke on Friday in the season opener for both schools.

The Braves took a 4-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run double by Nick Debo keying the rally.

UNC Pembroke added six more runs on four hits and an error in the fifth. Seth Hartings hit a three-run homer and Drew Beaver added a two-run blast to highlight the scoring.

Shepherd cut the lead to 10-1 with a run in the sixth.

Freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) led off with a single and moved to second on a single by senior second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando). Carney moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton East/Mercer CC) and later scored on a balk.

The Braves completed the scoring with a pair of runs in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Hartings and an RBI-double from River Ryan.

Doyle went 2-for-3 and junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) added a 2-for-4 effort to pace the Rams.

Debo went 3-for-4 and Roberto Rivera added a 3 for-5 outing for the Braves.

Redshirt-freshman pitcher Joe Rindone (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick/Towson) (4.1 IP, 4 K, 4 BB,8 R 6 ER) took the loss for the Rams. Anthony Burke (6.0 IP, 5 K, 1 BB, 1 ER) gained the win for the Braves with Cole Lovin (4 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) working the final three innings to notch the save.

The two teams return to action for a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the second game of a three-game set.
