PEMBROKE, N.C. – Shepherd University (1-1) handed UNC Pembroke (1-1) a 9-3 setback in baseball action at UNC Pembroke on Saturday.

The Rams took a 5-0 lead in the first inning.

Senior second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) reached on a walk and scored on a two-run blast off the bat of senior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech). Senior first baseman Mike Brown (Brandywine, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/Delaware Tech) singled and junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) reached on an infield error before junior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) followed with a three-run blast.
Shepherd took a 6-0 lead in the second when freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Braves cut the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the second as Nick Debo singled and later scored on a single by Alex Simpson.

The Rams added a pair of runs in the third as Hoffman reached on a walk and scored on a two-run homer by senior catcher Tyler Thomas (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge).

Shepherd upped its lead to 9-1 in the fourth as Carney reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch.

UNC Pembroke added a pair of runs in the fifth as Drew Beaver and Stibel Aleman Saba each drove in a run.

Brown and senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.

Debo went 3-for-3 and Beaver added a 3-for-4 effort for the Braves.

Senior pitcher John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (1-0) (8.0 IP, 7 K, 1 BB, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER) earned the win for the Rams. Junior reliever Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) tossed hitless ball in the ninth to cap the victory. Kyle Boraski (0-1) (2.0 IP, 3 K, 2 BB, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER) took the loss for the Braves.

The two teams return to action for a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the final game of a three-game set.
