UNC Pembroke Outslugs Shepherd Baseball

Box Score PEMBROKE, N.C. – UNC Pembroke (2-1) recorded an 11-6 win over Shepherd University (1-2) in baseball action at UNC Pembroke on Sunday.

The Braves took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Roberto Rivera reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch. Nick Salisbury walked and eventually scored on a balk.

UNC Pembroke added a run in the second on a solo homer by Nick Debo.

The Braves added two more runs in the third as Drew Beaver reached on a hit-by-pitch, stole second, and moved to third on a single by Stibel Aleman Saba. Beaver later scored on a sacrifice fly from Justin Dattilo and Saba would score on a balk.

UNC Pembroke added a run in the fourth as Rivera led off with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Beaver.

The Braves added three runs in the fifth to take a 9-0 advantage with a two-run single by Rivera keying the rally.

Shepherd plated three runs in the sixth as freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) led off with a double and senior second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) followed with an RBI-double. Carney later scored on a two-run blast off the bat of senior shortstop Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton East/Mercer CC).

The Rams added a run in the seventh as junior catcher Dalton Haymaker (New Oxford, Pa./Delone Catholic/Frederick CC) doubled and later scored on a double by Carney.

Shepherd tacked on a run in the eighth as senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) walked and later scored on a ground out by senior infielder Tyler Piccolo (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point/Dowling)..

The Braves added a pair of runs in the eighth as Beaver led off with a single and later scored on a single by Saba. Saba was replaced by pinch runner Hartings, who scored on an error.

Shepherd scored its final run in the ninth when Doyle singled and later scored on a ground out by Kirk.

Carney had a pair of doubles and Doyle added a pair of hits to lead the Rams.

Saba went 3-for-5 to pace the Braves.

Sophomore starter Ryan Simpson (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) (0-1) (3.0 IP, 0 K, 3 BB, 3 H, 5 R, 4 ER) took the loss for the Rams. Jesse Stinnett (1-0) (6.0 IP, 5 K, 0 BB, 7 H, 3 ER) gained the win for the Braves.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to USC Aiken for a 4 p.m. contest.
