AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) added 16 to lead Shepherd University (14-9, 11-6 MEC) to a 67-60 win over Notre Dame (15-8, 9-8 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Thursday night.
Muhammad hit on 7-of-11 field goals with a 2-of-5 performance from three-point range. He was 2-of-3 from the foul line. He also tied Notre Dame's Kyauta Taylor with a game-high nine rebounds.
Four players were double figures for the Rams as junior guard
Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) and sophomore forward
Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) each tossed in 12 points.
Will Vorhees scored a game-high 27 points to pace the Falcons. Taylor added 13 points.
Notre Dame had a 30-27 lead at halftime.
The Rams rallied in the second half to take an eight point lead at 58-50 with 4:37 left after a three-pointer by Muhammad. Notre Dame rallied to within two points at 62-60 after a layup by Vorhees with 2:12 remaining. Carr drained a three-pointer with 49 seconds left to give the Rams a five-point cushion. After a layup by Notre Dame's Jay Banyasz with 45 seconds remaining, the Rams drained 4-of-4 free throws in the final second to seal the win.
Shepherd connected on 38.3 percent (23-60) from the floor with a 25.8 percent (8-31) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 72.2 percent (13-18) of their free throws.
Notre Dame shot 40.4 percent (23-57) from the floor with a 32.1 percent effort (9-28) from three-point range. The Falcons shot 50 percent (5-10) from the charity stripe.
Shepherd had a 46-35 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced nine turnovers and committed nine.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Urbana for a 4 p.m. game.
