Shepherd Softball Takes Two at Salem Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. – Shepherd University (9-4) swept a pair of games in softball action at the Salem Tournament on Saturday. The Rams posted a 9-0 win over Bloomsburg in five innings in an early game and added a 8-3 triumph over Indiana (Pa.) in a later game. The Ram recorded their sixth straight victory.

Shepherd scored a pair of runs in the first inning against Bloomsburg. Sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) reached on a walk and later scored when freshman infielder Debbie Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) reached base on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded. Senior outfielder/pitcher Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) plated senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson), who walked, on an RBI-single for the other run.

The Rams add two runs in the second on a two-run single by junior outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie).

Sophomore catcher Kelsie Weaver (York, Pa./West York) and sophomore outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) each drove in a run in the third to give the Rams a 6-0 lead.

Shepherd added a run in the fourth on a solo blast by Robinson.

Sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan Medford, N.J. Shawnee) smacked an RBI-double and Stuart had an RBI-single in the fifth to complete the scoring.

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) went the distance scattered four hits to gain the win for the Rams against Bloomsburg. She fanned three in a shutout effort.

The Rams scored four runs in the fifth against IUP to pull away for the victory. Sophomore catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) hit a two-run single to key the rally.

Shepherd also got a two-run homers from Gilligan and Witt and a solo blast from Buckworth in the victory.

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (1-1) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) picked up the complete game win for the Rams.

The Rams return to action next Saturday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
