Shepherd Softball Splits with Millersville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (11-8) split a doubleheader with Millersville (8-9) in non-conference softball action at Shepherd on Tuesday. The Marauders held on for a 5-4 win in game one, while Shepherd used a 13-hit attack en route to a 13-4 win in five innings in the nightcap to gain the split.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap behind an RBI-double from senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) and an RBI-single from junior outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie).

Millersville got a run in the top of the second on an RBI-double by Maggie Murphy.

Shepherd plated five runs in the bottom of the frame with a grand slam by sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan Medford, N.J. Shawnee) igniting the rally.

The Marauders added a pair of runs in the fourth on another RBI-double from Murphy and an RBI-bunt from Nicole Burke.

Junior pinch-hitter Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) hit a three-run double in the fourth to give the Rams a 10-3 advantage.

Millersville got a run in the fifth on an RBI-double by Maggie Smith.

Shepherd earned the early win in the bottom of the fifth as Sara North (Belcamp, Md./Harford Technical) led off with a single and was replaced by freshman pinch runner Bailee Jackson (Union, W.Va./James Monroe). Sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) reached on an error to plate Jackson. Senior outfielder/pitcher Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) reached on a fielder's choice when Konopka was tagged out and Witt followed with a two-run blast to left to end the contest.

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (4-2) (4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) earned the win for the Rams. Emma Bevard (1.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) took the loss for the Marauders.

Millersville took a 5-0 lead in fourth inning in game one on five hits and one error. Heather Lutz had a two-run double, while Megan McCurdy and Rebecca Blatt each drove in a run to key the rally.

Shepherd rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Gilligan smacked a three-run double and Konopka added an RBI-single to fuel the scoring.

Sophomore catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) and Konopka each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Morgan Almodovar went 3-for-3 and Lutz added a pair of hits for the Marauders.

Junior pitcher Kaitlin Munda (Nokesville, Va./Kettle Run/Francis Marion) (3.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (4-5) took the loss for the Rams. Cassidy Pinchorski (6.2 IP, 8 H, 4 ER,3 K, 3 BB) (3-5) gained the win for the Marauders. Bevard earned the save (0.1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB).

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Urbana for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
