Shepherd Baseball Splits with West Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (9-11, 7-1 MEC) swept a pair of games with West Virginia Wesleyan (6-14, 5-3 MEC) in MEC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. Shepherd recorded a 7-4 victory in game one, while West Virginia Wesleyan recorded an 8-2 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the second inning in game one behind an RBI-double by sophomore shortstop Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and a sacrifice fly by freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run).

The Rams added four runs in the third. Junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) belted a two-run homer to key the rally. Doyle had an RBI-double and senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) added an RBI-single.

The Bobcats cut the lead to 6-1 in the sixth as Hunter Rotarius reached on a hit-by-pitch and scored on a single by Dominic Castello.

Shepherd added a run in the sixth on a solo blast by senior first baseman Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton East/Mercer CC).

The Bobcats rallied with three runs in the seventh behind a two-run double from Travis Renner and an RBI-single from James Fraser.

Carney and McCourt each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Castello and Fraser had two hits each for the Bobcats.

Junior pitcher Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 7 K, 1 BB) (3-0) earned the win for the Rams. Jake Bishop (5.2 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (1-4) took the loss for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats used a 12-hit attack en route to the nightcap win.

Wesleyan plated three runs on five hits in the third inning and added three more runs on three hits in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.

The Bobcats added a run in the fifth on a homer by Wyatt Adkins.

Shepherd got a run in the sixth on a solo blast by Sarty

The Rams added a run in the eighth on an RBI-single off the bat of senior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech).

John Koon hit a solo homer in the ninth for the final run for Wesleyan.

Alex Skinner went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored to pace the Bobcats.

Sarty led the Rams with a pair of hits.

Senior pitcher John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (2-4) (4.0 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) took the loss for the Rams. Rotarius (7.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (1-2) gained the win for the Bobcats.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
