Shepherd Softball Takes Pair from Urbana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 URBANA, Ohio – Shepherd University (15-8, 5-3 MEC) swept a doubleheader with Urbana University (7-9, 4-4 MEC) in MEC softball action at Urbana on Saturday. The Rams gained a 9-1 win in game one and added a 10-1 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd plated seven runs in the first inning in game one with as freshman shortstop Debbie Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) and sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) each smacked two-run doubles to fuel the rally.

The Rams added two runs in the fourth on an RBI-double from sophomore outfielder Ariana Ramirez Gainesville, Va./Patriot) and an RBI-single from senior outfielder/pitcher Paige Buckworth (Elkton, Md./North East) to take a 9-0 lead.

Urbana scored a run in the fourth on an RBI-double by Mykee Holtz.

Konopka went 3-for-3 and Buckworth added a 2-for-3 effort to pace the Rams.

Sophomore pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (4-1) earned the win. Courtney Stewart (0.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) (4-4) took the loss for the Blue Knights.

Urbana took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in the nightcap as Jenna Van Hoose led off with a single and scored on a single by Margo Jackson.

Shepherd scored 10 runs in the fourth to gain the early victory. Senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) hit a three-run double, junior designate player Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) added a two-run double, while Konopka had a two-run single to key the rally.

Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (6-2) (5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) earned the win for the Rams. Carly Allen (4.2 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (3-5) took the loss for the Blue Knights.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
