Shepherd Baseball Edged by Shippensburg

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shippensburg (7-11-1) handed Shepherd University (9-12) a 7-6 setback in baseball action at Fairfax Field on Wednesday.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an opposite field home run by senior outfielder Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech).

Shepherd took advantage of two errors and a hit to add three more runs in second to take a 4-0 lead.

The Raiders scored a run in the third as Jake Kennedy reached on a walk and later scored on an error.

Shippensburg took a 5-4 lead with four runs in the fifth. Kennedy had a two-run single to key the rally.

Junior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) belted a solo blast to left field in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.

Shippensburg took a 7-5 lead in the seventh with a pair of unearned runs. Dalton Hoiles drove in a run on a fielder's choice to spark the scoring.

Shepherd added a run in the eighth as sophomore shortstop Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) led off with a single and later scored on a double by junior catcher Dalton Haymaker (New Oxford, Pa./Delone Catholic/Frederick CC).

Heleine and Haymaker each went 2-for-4, while McCourt scored a pair of runs to lead the Rams.

Hoiles and Kennedy each drove in a pair of runs and Ryan McMillen scored two to lead the Raiders.

Senior pitcher Brandon Hovel (Aberdeen, Md./Kenwood/CCBC Dundalk) (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (0-2) took the loss for the Rams. Andy Crum (2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (1-2) gained the win for the Raiders with Michael Hope setting the Rams down in order in the ninth to earn the save.

The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host UVa-Wise for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
